Spice Up Your Life, from The Violet Hour in Chicago: During happier pre-pandemic days, we used to take frequent weekend trips to Chicago to go to the theater and visit some of our favorite restaurants. Over in Wicker Park, there’s a place called The Violet Hour, which has a delightful collection of pre-Prohibition style drinks. From The Vivant’s Top Ten: Fall Cocktail Roundup, bartender Adam Worthy shares this perfect seasonal drink.

A James Beard award-winning “speakeasy,” a wonderful place to visit which always reminds me of my grandfather, Wladyslaw, who had a little bootlegging operation in his home here in Indiana during those Prohibition years. Oh, the stories he told! Unfortunately those stories were all in Polish and were hard for me to understand. Nonetheless, I think my old dzia-dzia would have appreciated Adam’s great old-school recipes.

Ingredients

  • 5 oz Bounty Spiced Rum
  • 5 oz Laird’s House Barrel Apple Brandy
  • 1 oz autumnal spiced syrup
  • Whole egg
  • Grated nutmeg

Instructions

Add ingredients to shaker, including the egg. Dry shake well, without ice. Shake vigorously with ice. Double strain into a glass and garnish.
