Shares

Choice and selection of braces is always a tricky matter in case of adults, as the age passes, the teeth become more potent and embedded in gums, so it gets difficult to align them adequately. But it is never too late. You can have your braces at any time of your life.

But the main questions that arise in every mind is when is the right time for braces? Well, the best time dentists recommend for having braces is between 10 and 18 years. As this is the perfect age when gums are comparatively smooth and developing in nature, the teeth are not that much embedded in nature. So braces can produce an effective treatment for the misaligned teeth.

There are many treatment options regarding adult braces. These include the following ones:

Conventional Braces:

These are also known as traditional braces, they include the metallic or ceramic (also called as porcelain) types of braces. Brackets and metallic wires are used. They work by applying a push-in force. The difference between these two is only that in metallic braces, metal brackets are used while in case of ceramic braces, brackets made up of ceramic material are used.

Both are good options, but the metallic braces are superior in quality and durability. The only advantage of ceramic braces is that they are less visible in nature, because their color matches the color of teeth, so it is difficult to pick them in the first look.

On the other hand, metallic braces look like ‘train track’ when a person smiles because of their clear visibility. The disadvantages include harm to the mucosa of the buccal cavity by wire or brackets and dental or gum infections, breakage or detachments.

Even after the advancement of dental medicine, and introduced various other types of braces, people still prefer the conventional type of braces because of their economic and effective nature.

Invisalign:

As the name suggests, these braces are invisible to others, they are also known as clear braces because they appear clear invisibility, and the color of teeth is actually visible in the background. It is just a recent advancement in the field of orthodontics.

They are made up of special dyes by the computer which matches the patient’s old teeth view and the desired view. They are removable in nature, for example, if someone wishes to remove them at night, they can be removed. But the period for their wearing is around 22 hours. The total treatment duration is approx. 14 months.

There are many disadvantages of these braces, for example, you cannot drink hot drinks like hot water, tea or coffee, you cannot also drink sugary drinks as they all will erode out the braces. Moreover, they stain really bad if the care is not taken out properly.

Lingual Braces:

They are an uncommon type and rarely used braces. The brackets are fixed behind the teeth, and wires are passed through it. They work by applying pull-in force so that teeth align properly.

They may interfere in speech and irritate the tongue movements, so they are a little inconvenient in nature. But the success rate is the same as that of traditional braces. The advantage of these braces is that they are almost invisible to people unless and until mouthful appearance is viewed by someone.

Damon Braces:

These may look similar to the conventional braces, but they are slightly different in the fact that these braces do not need rubber bands to adjust the braces. The wire of these braces slide through the brackets, and it makes this type of braces a good choice for patients.

Smart Braces:

These types of braces are designed in such a way that they produce effective and desired results in lesser time. They are made up of trays or sets which can be fixed upon the teeth. They can be removed as well while eating, drinking, brushing, and sleeping.

Their duration of treatment period is much shorter, even sometimes less than 1 year. They have revolutionized the field of orthodontics and dental medicine

Other Treatment Options:

These include the usage of Palatal Expanders and Forsus Appliances, the former works by insertion of an especially designed structure which gets fitted into the upper part of the buccal cavity, just below the palate, it pushes the upper set of teeth in an outward direction, and the misaligned teeth get aligned.

The latter works by insertion of special springs and short devices which pulls and pushes the teeth apply pressure and correct the alignment of the teeth. According to the recommendations of American doctors, every child of 7 years or under should be screened well before time for the misalignment of teeth.

These advancements also correct the bite and proper articulation of both of the jaw sets. They are used in the modern era of orthodontics and are thriving.
