Entertaining 101: How To Throw the Ultimate Oscars Viewing Party

TwigandThistle_Oscar_PopcornBox_1Celebrities don’t have to be the only ones celebrating the Oscars this Sunday. Instead of another lazy weekend evening watching TV in pajamas, think champagne, friends, and festive decor. Although you may not be winning any awards, the Oscars make for a great excuse to throw a fancy party of your own. And any excuse for a party is a good one as far as we are concerned.

With that in mind we consulted with Alex Hitz, celebrity chef, founder of the luxury gourmet food product line The Beverly Hills Kitchen, and author of My Beverly Hills Kitchen: Classic Southern Cooking with a French Twist, for tips on throwing the ultimate Oscars viewing party.

Never Settle. “Don’t skimp on anything,” Hitz advises. “If you serve frozen pizza or caviar, make sure it’s the best. Whatever it is, make sure it’s the best.” Why not pour Moët & Chandon for your guests, which is the official champagne of the Oscars this year? Instead of regular movie popcorn, serve truffle flavored popcorn to your guests. The little extras will make a big difference.

Timing Is Key. “Make a schedule and stick to it,” Hitz says. “Serve dinner on time and don’t wait on anybody.” To help keep the mood up before dinner, make ballots for everyone to fill out before the show begins. It will boost everyone’s Oscars spirit. Announce your group’s predicted winners to cap off dinner before you sit down to watch the show.

Stick To What You Know. “Stay authentic,” Hitz advises. “Don’t try to do too much. And do everything ahead of time.” Think foods that you can prepare ahead of your guests arrival, so that you can keep cooking to a minimum. One of the dishes being served at the Governor’s Ball (the official Oscars after-party) this year is blinis topped with smoked salmon, something that would be easy to prepare in advance.

Keep It Real. “Do not be pretentious, because the higher the monkey climbs the poll the more he shows his ass,” Hitz shared of his party planning philosophy. Enough said. Instead of going crazy with movie themed decor opt for simple black and white decorations and white flowers. Your guests will undoubtedly be impressed with your chic aesthetic.

If All Else Fails. “If there is any problem, just come to my house for the Oscars because I give a really big party every year,” Hitz shared. Here’s to hoping our invitation is in the mail.
