Billionaire Watch: Janet Jackson’s Husband Wissam al Mana Is a Retail Mogul With a Taste For Hermès
There are 1,426 billionaires in the world. Sure, you know the big names from the list like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Mark Zuckerberg, but what about the other 1,423? With that in mind we bring you Billionaire Watch, highlighting the undercover billionaires, their Gulfstreams, and oftentimes celebrity love interests.
Janet Jackson’s love life has long been covered in the media. For awhile, it seemed that she had found true love with mega-rich producer and rapper Jermaine Dupri. Alas, the high profile couple split in 2009, and she soon began dating a mysterious man named Wissam al Mana shortly after meeting at a hotel opening in Dubai in 2010. Since then, the duo have been inseparable. Months after they announced their engagement, it was revealed that they had actually secretly married already. Unlike other Middle Easter playboys Al Mana has maintained a fairly low profile, until now of course. Here, we breakdown everything you need to know about this billionaire.
Name: Wissam al Mana
Age: 38, which is eight years younger than 46-year-old Jackson
Worth: He’s worth a cool $1 billion, which is nothing to scoff at. Meanwhile, Jackson’s net worth is estimated at $150 million, so it’s not like she married for the money.
Business: Al Mana’s wealth comes from a business his late father started called Al Mana Retail Group. He works with his three brothers at the company, which has built an empire of luxury properties in the Middle East. Brands he has represented include Balenciaga, Hermès, Giorgio Armani, and Roberto Cavalli. He also makes a hefty sum as a shareholder in Saks Fifth Avenue stores across the Middle Easts, including outposts in Dubai and Bahrain. It’s no surprise that the duo attended Milan Fashion Week together given their shared interest in fashion.
Background: The Qatari billionaire grew up in London, where he is said to have developed a love of fashion thanks to the glamorous boutiques on Kings Lane. He worked in retail before entering the family business.
Homes: Due to his low profile, there isn’t much information as to where he primarily resides, but it is known that he has multiple homes worldwide including one in Qatar and another in London. He’s also been known to spend quite a bit of time in Dubai, so its likely he has a residence there as well. Meanwhile, Jackson has a lavish home in Los Angeles.
Pricey Duds: Being as he is so involved in fashion, it’s no surprise that the guy has style. He once sat down with Harper’s Bazaar Arabia and revealed some of the outrageously expensive items in his closet. His favorite jeans are by Dior and Dolce & Gabbana, and he frequently wears an Hermès or Balenciaga hoodie paired with a Rick Owens tank top and leather jacket. His favorite sneakers are by Louboutin. Whenever he wears a suit, its custom Armani, and it’s paired entirely with Hermès accessories—from the shirt to the belt to the shoes. He wears traditional attire when he’s in the Arab states, including a luxury thobe and ghutra.
Gifts: The ring he gave Jackson upon proposing is allegedly so large that she refuses to wear it outside of the house. Given his love of fashion, he clearly showers her with designer duds and pricey items like an Hermès Birkin bag, which she was spotted carrying while in Milan with him recently.
Toys: Despite many magazine accounts that the couple was having a $20 million wedding, they tied the knot in a secret ceremony. One of the alleged wedding details revealed is that they were flying all of Jackson’s family out to Qatar on his fleet of private planes. Although we can’t confirm the make or model, it’s a safe bet that when these two travel, it isn’t commercial. Another thing that we can say with certainty is that Al Mana loves to vacation aboard pricey yachts. The couple have been spotted repeatedly vacationing aboard a private yacht in Sardinia, Italy.
Philanthropy: The duo are incredibly generous, and revealed that for their wedding gifts to one another, they took a philanthropic approach. “Our wedding gifts to one another were contributions to our respective favorite children’s charities. We would appreciate that our privacy is respected and that we are allowed this time for celebration and joy. With love, Wissam and Janet,” they wrote in a statement.
